I just bought an Ideal A-55 and it cool down fine, but the thermostat does not turn off and it get too cold. I replaced the thermostat with a unit I got years ago when restoring and old V39, but the same thing happens, you have to turn it on and off at the dial. What I don't understand is where the probe actuallys goes in the slider. I pushed the probe up through the bottom corner, just like the one that whas in there, but really can't figure out where it's going. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim

Low coolant charge can cause this.

Thanks for the help. The unit cooled down quickly, so I was thinking it had enough freon. I will have someone check the freon.
Thanks,
Jim

I'm by no means an expert on cooling or this machine, but the Ideal 55 I have had the same problem and what I remember is that this is a contact type thermostat (the tip needs to be touching the cooling line or the cabinet, not just pushed up there). I think it's reading the air temp and it can't get cold enough to turn off the unit...

Thanks for the response. What I don't understand is where the probe actually goes when you insert it next to the refrigerant line going up into the cabinet. When you open the main lid, you don't see the tip of the thermostat. I was think about drilling a small hole in the bottom and inserting the thermostat probe up into the lower cabinet that holds the reserve drinks. At least that way, it's up where the temp is cold. Do you think that will work?
Thanks,

Jim

I have seen that done before...not sure of the results, but it sounds like it should work...you will get drainage from condensation out the hole unless you use something to seal it up. Good luck!
