Disassembly

There are no working parts to disassemble. I just took off the lids which came on the machine, but must have been made by a tinsmith as they are not original. I took off the top frame.

Sanding Striping

I used a round brush attachment on the end of my drill to strip off the old paint. Areas that were particularly rusty I applied naval jelly, then went to work with the brush. Did the same thing to the inside galvanized liner.

BodyWork

Most of the rust was surface rust. There was one spot on the frame around the top, which had rusted through. On that hole I patched with Bondo and sanded it.

MetalWork

After stripping the paint, I cleaned off the dust and grime then primered with Heavy-duty Krylon Primer (Ruddy Brown).

Painting

The underside of the chest was painted black. I sprayed the legs and frame Rust-oleum Hi Performance Enamel (Hunter Green #7538). The red was a Rust-oleum High Performance Enamel (I don't know the color code). The inside was sprayed with Rust-oleum Cold Galvanizing Compound (#7585). It had numerous coats of each.

EmbossingDecals

The side panels are embossed, but were in really bad shape. I taped off the frame then painted all the side panels red. I traced the embossing onto plastic laminate and cut with an exacto knife. Stuck the stencil on with a spray adhesive made for stenciling and sprayed the embossing white.

Rubber

There aren't any gaskets, door seals, or rubber items. I did put some thin padded vinyl tape to the underside of the lids to prevent scratching.

Other

I polished the brass tag with brass polish. I attached a NOS bottle opener. There were no casters so new ones were added.
