Vendo used more than one serial-number system. Start with the model number, then use the matching date method.
Decode a Vendo serial
The short answer
Do not decode the serial until you know the model.
Look for a riveted metal tag on the cabinet, door liner, or refrigeration area.
Record the complete Model No. and Serial No. exactly as stamped.
Use a date-coded serial when it matches that format. Otherwise use the factory model range.

When the serial is only a sequence
Use the factory range
Example: a V-81 carrying serial 25000 falls within the factory’s 1957 range. These numbers cannot be applied to a V-39, V-23, V-144, or another model—the ranges are model-specific.

This surviving Vendo sheet lists annual serial ranges for several cooler models from 1946 through 1959. It is more reliable than applying one internet formula to every machine.
- Confirm the exact model first.
- Keep letters, prefixes, and leading zeroes.
- Use the range only for the matching model.
- Treat replacement or missing tags cautiously.
What the tag can tell you
Year and month—sometimes.
A correct plate can help establish the model, electrical specification, refrigeration-unit information, and an approximate production date.
It does not automatically prove the machine’s original paint, Coca-Cola configuration, exact day of manufacture, or whether major components were replaced later.
