Wet Sanding, Compounding, Polishing and Wax

Inspect and measure

Fresh restoration paint must cure as its technical sheet specifies. On existing finishes, identify single-stage versus clearcoat, inspect edges and body lines, and use a paint-thickness gauge when readings are meaningful. Do not sand unknown-thickness original graphics.

Sanding sequence

For known, adequately thick refinishing material, professionals may level defects with 1500 or 2000 grit, then refine with 2500–3000. Keep the surface clean, use an interface pad where appropriate, and squeegee often. Hand-sand edges cautiously or mask them off. Never promise that sanding can safely remove every defect.

Compound and polish

Use a test spot. A common workflow is a cutting compound with a microfiber/wool or firm foam pad, followed by a finishing polish and softer foam. Examples include 3M Perfect-It, Meguiar’s M110/M210, and equivalent Rupes systems. Match pad, liquid, machine speed and panel temperature; clean pads frequently.

Protection

Remove polishing oils before inspection. After the coating’s cure window, protect with a non-cleaner wax or sealant compatible with the finish. Examples include Collinite 845 and Meguiar’s M26. Wax adds gloss and water behavior; it does not replace clearcoat or stop active rust.

Common failures

Haze means the abrasive pattern was not fully refined. Swirls often come from a dirty pad, too-aggressive combination or poor lighting. Burn-through requires repainting. Keep rotary polishers away from sharp edges unless you have the experience to control them.
