Sharp embossed lettering comes from surface preparation, a controlled paint load and a method chosen for the shape of the embossing.

Prepare and practice
Finish and cure the cabinet color first. Clean away wax and polish. Photograph original color boundaries before stripping. Practice the technique on scrap with similar relief and make a spray-out sample for color and sheen.
Masking method
For deep, simple embossing, carefully mask the surrounding panel with fine-line and low-tack tape, scuff only the letter face as the coating system permits, then spray light coats. Remove tape at the paint maker’s recommended stage to avoid tearing an edge.
Roller or pad method
A small, firm foam roller or sign painter’s pounce pad can touch only the raised face. Load very little paint, roll it out on a palette, and build coverage in several passes. This is often safer than flooding recesses with a brush.
Brush method
A quality sign-painting brush and lettering enamel such as 1 Shot can handle irregular details, but confirm compatibility with the cured automotive finish. Use a mahl stick or stable hand rest. Do not wipe mistakes with strong solvent; let them cure and correct them by a tested method.
Final decisions
Some machines used decals or screened graphics over embossing. Verify the original treatment before painting. Clearcoat over lettering only when the complete system and graphic material are compatible; always test a sample first.
