VMC 44

The VMC 44 and Vendo 44 are iconic vintage Coca-Cola vending machines that share a common lineage but were produced under different company names due to corporate changes in the mid-20th century.()

Origins: Vendorlator Manufacturing Corporation (VMC)

The VMC 44 was introduced in 1956 by Vendorlator Manufacturing Corporation (VMC). This model was designed to accommodate 44 bottles of 6.5 oz Coca-Cola, making it a compact yet efficient choice for small businesses. Notably, the VMC 44 featured a metal inner door liner and lacked the chromed coin entry bezel that would later become characteristic of its successor.

Acquisition by Vendo

In 1956, Vendo Corporation acquired VMC. Despite the acquisition, VMC continued to produce the VMC 44 under its original branding. However, over time, the VMC 44 began to be marketed under the Vendo name as the Vendo 44. This transition reflected the consolidation of the two companies and the desire to unify branding under the Vendo name.

Differences Between VMC 44 and Vendo 44

While both models are similar in function and design, there are distinguishing features:()
• Coin Entry Bezel: The Vendo 44 features a chromed coin entry bezel, a design element not present on the VMC 44.
• Inner Door Liner: The Vendo 44 has a plastic inner door liner, whereas the VMC 44 uses a metal liner.
• Serial Numbers: VMC 44 machines have serial numbers starting with a “P,” specific to VMC, while Vendo 44 machines have different serial numbering conventions.

Legacy and Collectibility

The Vendo 44 became one of the most popular and enduring soda machines of its era, produced from 1957 until 1961. Its compact size, classic 1950s aesthetic, and efficient design contributed to its widespread adoption in small shops across the United States. Even after the introduction of newer models with square-top designs, the Vendo 44 remained unchanged due to its proven convenience for vendors.

Today, both the VMC 44 and Vendo 44 are highly sought after by collectors. The Vendo 44, in particular, is considered more valuable in the American market due to its association with the Vendo brand and its distinctive features.
